1-29-12 College Basketball Rankings

I've updated the ranking formula slightly. Quick summary:

The dropoff in benefits accrued to wins over quality opponents vs mediocre opponents is quicker; the dropoff from benefits accrued to wins over mediocre vs weaker opponents is slower. The converse is also true when looking at losses.

And now for the new rankings:

Rankings Misadventures

The most frequently referenced poll in major college basketball is the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll - it seems sensible because surely the coaches know who's best, even if occasionally they have a conflict of interest when voting.

However, coaches in major college basketball implicitly know other programs that they respect and assume to be good - after all, who has time to follow all 344 Division I Programs, and have a full time job that is highly demanding? Those 'household' name programs are likely to crop up amongst the top of any ranking because when you think of college basketball, you tend to think of Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, Indiana, Kansas as opposed to um, Iona.

That bias will tend to produce results that are skewed towards schools with rich basketball history. Today we're going to look at the ranking resume of one mid-major powerhouse compared with more prestigious programs. As we've previously discussed, home court advantage is a major factor in college basketball (69% of home teams won their games last year). We'll also use my rankings as a proxy for who the worst loss a team experienced; as of last week my computer generated rankings had a 96% correlation with the Massey Index.

Given those two caveats, the rest of the comparison should be pretty straight-forward.

Team A
Record: 17-3
4 Top RPI 50 Wins
% of Road Games: 30
Weakest loss via Andrade rankings: #27

Team B
Record: 18-2
4 Top RPI 50 Wins
% of Road Games: 40
Weakest loss via Andrade rankings: #88

Team C
Record: 16-3
5 Top RPI 50 Wins
% of Road Games: 21
Weakest Loss via Andrade Rankings: #56

You could make a case for any of these teams to be ranked ahead of one another.

A has only lost to teams that will make the NCAA Tournament, while B and C have lost to teams that will be in the NIT (if that in the case of B) if they fail to win their conference tournaments. However, this means that A is just 4-3 in games against the RPI top 50.

B has traveled the most, and although they've lost to the weakest opponent, they've lost the least period and have defeated just as many top RPI 50 teams as A and only one fewer than C, weakening any SOS arguments against them.

C has the most RPI Top 50 wins, but travels outside their home infrequently and that loss to #56 is puzzling.

Ready to reveal? A is Ohio State, B is Creighton and C is Kansas.

Bold Prediction: Assuming Creighton maintains their current pace and suffers no serious injuries, Creighton will be seeded at least two spots lower than Kansas and Ohio State and will advance further than one of the two.

Building Narratives into products

With the invention of TiVo and DVR's, consumers now have a choice of whether or not to watch commercials. Businesses have naturally responded by shifting advertising from the 'in-between' parts of the show to the show itself via product placement. But what types of placement are most effective?

In Martin Lindstrom's book, Buy-ology, Lindstrom analyzes the effects of different types of product placement and comes to the conclusion that those products that have a significant role in the process of the show are the ones that 'imprint' themselves upon consumers' brains - at the expense of OTHER brands.

Doing a quick mental exercise of product placements that I could remember (limiting myself to TV Shows) I came up with this list within a minute or two:

-Canadian Club - Mad Men. Don Draper has a drink of it in virtually every episode and consumes too much of it in many. The bottle is prominently featured on his desk.
-Chrysler Lebaron - Seinfield. Specifically, I think about the episode where George Costanza bought a Lebaron because he thought it belonged to Jon Voight.
-Cadillac Eldorado - Seinfield. Jerry bought his father a Cadillac and the neighbor crashed it into a swamp.
-Cool Whip - Family Guy. Stuey mispronounces it heavily.
-IPod - Family Guy. Jillian gets married and confuses her box of chocolates with an I-Pod.
JujiFruit - Seinfield. Elaine gets a box on the way to visit her boyfriend in the hospital. Her boyfriend is miffed that she stops for candy.
Sponge - Seinfield. Elaine's preferred method of birth-control runs in short supply and she evaluates prospective sexual partners based on whether they are 'sponge-worthy'.

In my lifetime, I have probably been exposed to thousands more (Lindstron estimates that over a 66 year time-span, the typical American is exposed to 2 million commercials) but these are the ones that stick out - the ones that build a narrative. Simply showing the product isn't sufficient - to stick in consumers' minds, a narrative that fits the story must be built in.

Jack and Coke

Aside from a less than subtle attempt to promote my employer's flagship product, what does the above subject line imply?

Certain products tend to go well together - and yet they aren't frequently manufactured by the same company, or necessarily sold in a combination (think root beer floats, hamburgers and brats, bbq chicken). These products could benefit from sharing ad fees and advertising costs - reduce the cost, put your product in your target consumer's mind and increase incremental sales.

I bring this up, because in a recent Kroger (KR) ad, I saw not a single combinatory ad - and it strikes me as an underutilized concept in the market plac.e

The Might of the Gaels

If you're reading this, you might wonder what a Gael is.  Likely the link didn't help you find out, but you did get to see a rather silly looking mascot.

To be honest, I didn't know much about Iona, much less where it was.  That is, until I started doing my college basketball rankings this year.  Week after week, Iona consistently appeared in my top 25 and are currently #21.
Iona is not the highest ranked mid-major in my rankings - but the others should be familiar to anyone whose passion for college basketball ranks between casual fan and watching 5+ games a week either because of the fact that their undefeated (Murray State) or the fact that they've done 'it' before (Creighton, Temple, Gonzaga).

So what is special about Iona? Presently, on the Massey Comparison Index, which is essentially a listing of several college basketball wonks who have a computer based ranking (where mine is listed) Iona is ranked #39 - with a peak of #8 and a low ranking of #72 - wildly diverging opinions.  They have a couple nice players, but none who are likely to be playing in the NBA.  They do have some nice wins but not over any household names in terms of college basketball powerhouses - their best wins are over a collection of mid-majors that will likely be in the tournament (Iona is almost certainly to be in the tournament - the next best team in their conference is rated at #96 - an NIT bubble team).

Most mid-majors that are successful usually have some sort of statistical niche that makes them successful because on a short time table, it's difficult to adjust to a niche style (see Bulldogs, Butler - last two years).  Iona is no exception.  According to KenPom, Iona plays the 15th fastest pace in NCAA Men's Division I basketball and 15th in offensive efficiency.  A run & gun high octane unit that has only a passing interest in defense (outside the top 100 in defensive effiency) isn't that unusual.

No, what makes Iona unique is the fact that as of this writing, they have more wins outside their building than any NCAA Division I Men's basketball team and are 10-3 away from their building.  Last year, college basketball teams won 68.4% of their home games so this feat is very impressive; the average College Basketball team playing 13 games away from their building would be 4-9 in those games.  To use a more prominent mid-major as a guide, prior to the NCAA Tournament, Butler was 11-7 (equivalent to 8-5) in games outside their building.

Given the somewhat obvious fact that every NCAA Tournament game takes place outside one's own building, this history of success should make Iona a downright dangerous NCAA team, and I predict that Iona will be fairly heavily underseeded.

Fearless forecast:  If Iona maintains it's current pace, they will likely finish around 13-3 or 14-2 in their league and win their league championship and be seeded no higher than 11th.  As long as Iona is at least a 12, I predict they will play an overseeded 'power conference team' and win.  If you're bored on a random Monday or Thursday night in January or February, check this team out.  You just might be impressed - all you need is an internet connection via ESPN3.com.

Fear the Gaels.
